Hookah glossary: words you'll hear in a lounge

Bowl: the top part that holds the tobacco. Phunnel: a bowl with a raised centre that stops juices dripping into the stem. Kaloud (or HMD): a metal cap that controls the heat instead of foil.

Pack: how the tobacco sits in the bowl, fluffy or dense. Harsh: an unpleasant, burnt taste, usually from too much heat. Clouds: thick white smoke, a sign of a well-heated bowl.

Purge: blowing gently into the hose to clear stale smoke. Hookah master: the person who prepares your hookah and looks after it during the evening. Don't hesitate to call them over.
